About Edgewater Chamber of Commerce

Founded in 1984, the Edgewater Chamber of Commerce is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization that promotes and supports business in the Edgewater community through marketing, education, networking, and advocacy programs. The mission of Edgewater Chamber of Commerce is to create and support a thriving business environment, contributing to a vibrant Edgewater community. In 2020, Edgewater Development Corporation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit joined forces with Edgewater Chamber of Commerce to further the goals of increasing commercial activity, promoting economic development, and strengthening existing businesses in the Edgewater community. In addition to serving its member businesses, Edgewater Chamber of Commerce administers Special Service Area #26 (SSA #26). Since 2003, this special tax district provides funding for additional services, programs, and improvements in Edgewater’s business corridors on Broadway (from Foster to Devon) and Devon (from Broadway to Glenwood).

Summary of Position

The Community Development Manager will work closely with the Executive Director, the SSA #26 Commission, and the Edgewater Economic Development Committee on programs that improve the streetscape, promote the community, attract business to Edgewater, and increase the overall vibrancy of Edgewater’s commercial districts. This position acts as the go-resource for businesses in the community to engage with Edgewater Chamber, SSA #26, and local economic development programs and initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Management of SSA #26:

  • Lead and administer SSA Commission meetings
  • Ensure that SSA #26 is in program compliance with the City of Chicago regulations and Illinois Open Meetings Act guidelines while conforming to organizational goals and work plans
  • Develop annual budget and workplan for submission to the City of Chicago
  • Act as a liaison to SSA Commission, City agencies, and taxpaying constituents
  • Manage, monitor, and facilitate all SSA programs and service contracts with third-party vendors, contractors and consultants (landscaping, holiday decorations, snow removal, trash removal, litter removal, tree maintenance, installation of wayfinding signage, installation of public art, bike rack installation)
  • Oversee SSA grant/rebate programs
  • Complete monthly/quarterly reporting, facilitate annual audits, and participate in program compliance with the City of Chicago’s SSA program
  • Develop and maintain tracking system for all SSA initiatives, service contracts, and reimbursement
  • Recruit new SSA commissioners as needed

Business Services

  • Serve as initial point of contact for new businesses, chamber members and SSA stakeholders and act as their go-to resource for chamber/SSA support initiatives, Neighborhood Business Development Center resources, and City of Chicago business programs
  • Manage the Edgewater Development Corporation Neighborhood Business Development Center (NBDC) grant program and work plan and track program deliverables
  • Attend training offered by the City of Chicago in relation to technical assistance for businesses
  • Solicit new member business and work closely with their teams to identify potential board members, committee members, and partnership opportunities

Business Attraction and Retention:

  • Promote the Edgewater community throughout Chicago
  • Identify and engage with prospective businesses and helping them to secure space in Edgewater through connections with brokers, landlords, and developers
  • Maintain a public-facing database of existing businesses and available spaces in Edgewater
  • Market Edgewater’s commercial corridors to fill vacant storefronts
  • Participate in events that promote Edgewater and the Edgewater business community
  • Manage Edgewater’s Economic Development and Planning Committee
  • Design and implement programs that bring awareness to the Edgewater community as a tool for economic development and business attraction
  • Oversee neighborhood planning along the commercial corridors in Edgewater including coordinating with consultants, city/county/state agencies, vendors, and stakeholders

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, emphasis in urban planning, economic development, public administration, or related field
  • 3-5 years professional experience
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Docs, Spreadsheets
  • Demonstrated experience leading meetings, public speaking, and making presentations
  • Strong written and graphic communication skills
  • Experience with project management, strategic planning, small business development, community development
  • Experience with budgetary management and compliance

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Experience managing a Special Service Area (SSA) or Business Improvement District (BID)
  • Experience in vendor management or contract management
  • Experience working directly with various City of Chicago departments
  • Experience in database management or association management software (ChamberMaster, GrowthZone, or similar)
  • Master’s degree, emphasis in urban planning, economic development, public administration, or related field
  • Experience in office setting for not-for-profit, membership organization, chamber of commerce or community organization
  • Familiarity with the Edgewater area/far north side of Chicago
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency

Position is located on-site in our office in Chicago, IL. Candidates must be located near Edgewater or within the Chicago area to be considered. While some flexible work arrangements and remote work may be possible, this position will be primarily in-person.
